The Grey (Review)

So we can all agree Liam Neeson can kick your ass, but is it enough? Or this film add more?

So we can all agree Liam Neeson can kick your ass, but is it enough? Or this film add more?

Just because the movie is 99% silent, does it make it bad or unworthy of watching it? By being Black and White, does it make it seem old and unwatchable or maybe even boring? Nonsense, This is the best movie of 2011 and it will win the Oscars this year, need more proof? Read down below.
The movie is about the change from silent films to the “talkies” and how George Valentine (Jean Dujardin) has to struggle with this new shift. George Valentine is the typical silent film Hollywood Actor, demonstrating all the dialogue and emotions using his face, as oppose to just talking about how you feel, and they couldn’t have picked a better actor to do so, since Dujardin understands perfectly what expressing through your face truly means. The movie also creates a debate of how great is it to move forward with the “talkies” and leave the silent films behind. There is one dream sequence which for me truly shows how the main protagonist is scared of this new shift and how because of his pride he will try to prevent the silent films from disappearing, it was a very amazing film depicting the fears of this actor. The supporting cast also works perfectly, especially the rising star in the film Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) who embraces the “talkies” but deep down knows the real potential and advantages the silent films actually had. There is a lot of humor, drama and even tragedy, which baffles me when the Golden Globes nominated this film in the Comedy or Musical category instead of drama, sure there is humor and there is ONE song in the film, but I feel this to be more of a drama than anything else. A must watch, and don’t be afraid or misguided just because it’s silent, instead embrace it, because it makes you appreciate the characters emotions and their actions even more.
Rating: 9.5/10 One of the Best Films of 2011, if not the Best, Most likely WILL win the Oscar for Best Picture, and it really deserves it.
